Skywarn is a U.S. Department of Commerce sanctioned group of volunteer severe weather spotters/trackers which are highly trained by the National Weather Service in severe weather recognition, storm dynamics, and post damage analysis. Our local Skywarn group is comprised of over 160 members including many of our city and county emergency services personnel. Reports are relayed from the field to an area Net Controller via 2-meter radio and phone and this information is immediately relayed to the NWS and to local emergency management agencies. This process compliments the existing tools such as Doppler Radar and satellite photos which the NWS uses to determine when to notify the public of severe weather conditions. Many times the information provided to the NWS by Skywarn is used as the basis for warnings issued to the public. It is our sincere hope that we can help save or reduce the loss of life and property due to severe weather in East Texas through our efforts.

GREAT NEWS... New Communications
Our new wide area communications repeater is now online and operational on 147.320. From now on this will be our primary frequency for severe weather communications and our weekly net held on Thursdays at 8pm. This new machine gives us greatly extended coverage with our storm trackers throughout the East Texas area. We welcome you to monitor this frequency to stay abreast of the very latest on any severe weather occurring in our area as you listen to actual on-the-spot field reports as the trackers call them in to the controller. Of course we also highly recommend everyone have a NOAA wx radio on hand at all times during threatening weather.

Would you like to receive SVR WX bulletins direct from the NWS and Skywarn?
We now provide FREE timely NWS Watch and Warning bulletins and Skywarn generated storm reports via email or Teletouch pager to anyone who would like to be on our alert list. Usually these bulletins are received before NOAA radio ever gets them broadcasted and we also offer Special Weather Statements and Mesoscale Discussions via email.

An Example NWS Generated "Special Weather Statement" which we can provide you.

THUNDERSTORM OUTLOOK
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SHREVEPORT LA
1000 AM CDT TUE MAY 11 1999

A MOIST AND UNSTABLE ATMOSPHERE CONTINUES OVER THE FOUR STATE REGION
THIS MORNING. THE INSTABILITY IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE EVEN MORE BY
LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT AND THIS COMBINED WITH AN UPPER
LEVEL DISTURBANCE MOVING ACROSS THE REGION WILL LEAD TO SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT.

THERE A SLIGHT CHANCE THAT SOME OF THE STORMS COULD BECOME SEVERE
TONIGHT. SQUALL LINE DEVELOPMENT IS EXPECTED ACROSS WEST TEXAS THIS
AFTERNOON AND EASTWARD MOVEMENT WOULD BRING THE STORMS INTO THE EAST
TEXAS REGION TONIGHT. THE MAIN THREAT IS FOR DAMAGING WIND AND HAIL.

ACTIVATION OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCIES, SKYWARN STORM SPOTTERS
AND HAM RADIO OPERATORS MAY BE NECESSARY TONIGHT.

WE HELP PROTECT EAST TEXAS... PLEASE HELP US.
Being a voluntary community service organization, we have no funding from outside sources, and the implementation of these projects costs our group plenty of money. The cost of the new wide area repeater alone was $3500.00. Thankfully, the County of Nacogdoches donated tower space to us or that project would have never been possible. If you, your company, or any organizations would like to contribute to a fund to help us pay off this new repeater or any of our numerous other projects, we would certainly appreciate your donation. All of the public services that we offer our East Texas communities are free and performed by a very dedicated group of individuals, but implementing these services is costly to us and we do need financial assistance to help insure the continued success of this severe weather tracking and reporting service. This website receives on average around 150 hits a day and we will be glad to place banners on this site prominently displaying and linking to our supporting sponsors.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING US MAKE THIS POSSIBLE!

Please email me or give me a call at (936) 569-0447 to find out how you can join our group or if you would like to help fund any of our projects to help insure their continuance.

Don't forget our WEATHER NET is held each Thursday night on 147.320 at 8:00. Please check in with us if you are a ham, or monitor us if you are able. To stay abreast of any new wx developments you may want to monitor this frequency during any local severe weather events.
